Economic profile of Blagoevgrad district


The district is situated in the Southwestern part of Bulgaria and borders Greece, Macedonia, and four other districts.

The area of the district is 6449 sq. km. It is the third largest in Bulgaria after the Burgas and Sofia districts and comprises 5.8 % of the country's territory.

The Municipality of Sandanski is situated in Southwest Bulgaria on an area of 998 400 sq.m, and shares a common border with the Republic of Greece. In terms of area, it is the largest municipality in the District of Blagoevgrad, third largest in the Southwest planning region (after the municipalities of Sofia and Samokov) and ninth largest in the Republic of Bulgaria.

Its north-eastern border is with the Municipality of Sandanski and on the north with the Municipality of Strumyani. The international boundaries on the west and south are respectively the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Greece.

The municipality of Kresna is situated in southwestern Bulgaria. The total area of the municipality is 344,5 sq.km. The valley of the Struma River splits the territory of the municipality in two major parts – Pirinska and Malashevska. The Municipality of Kresna has a common border with the municipalities of Simitli, Razlog, Bansko, Sandanski, Strumyani and the Republic of Macedonia.

Economic profile of municipality of Strumyani

The Municipality of Strumyani is situated in Southwest Bulgaria in the District of Blagoevgrad and includes 21 settlements. The Strumyani Municipality has a territory amounting to 362 sq.km, which represents 5, 72% of the total territory of the Blagoevgrad Region. The Municipality covers the eastern slopes of Maleshevska Mountain, the Strouma river valley and a small area of the western part of Pirin Mountains.
